Person Specific Moving and Handling for PAs

About this course

Every person has unique support needs – and the safest, most dignified care happens when a Personal Assistant (PA) understands exactly how to support that individual, based on a thorough and up-to-date risk assessment and personalised handling plan.
This bespoke session, delivered by one of our qualified occupational therapists, provides PAs with hands-on, practical instruction in applying a specific individual’s handling plan in their own home environment. It is distinct from generic moving and handling training and is designed to complement it, not replace it.

Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, risk assessments must be specific to the task and the individual. The Care Act 2014 further reinforces the importance of person-centred approaches to care and support. This session ensures that PAs are equipped to follow an agreed handling plan safely, confidently, and in a way that respects the individual’s preferences and promotes their independence.

The session covers:

  • Review and understanding of the individual’s current risk assessment and handling plan.
  • Practical, supervised instruction in all techniques and transfers specified in the plan.
  • Safe use of any equipment relevant to the individual (e.g. specific hoist, sling type, transfer aids).
  • What to do if circumstances change or a technique doesn’t feel safe.
  • Who to contact with queries about the handling plan.

Please note: To make the most of this training, PAs should have already completed generic moving and handling training. When you enquire, our team will ask a few questions to ensure the right training is arranged for your situation. Our one-day day Level 2 Moving and Handling trainings are available to provide the necessary basic level of knowledge.

Who is this course for?

A note on choosing the right training: Not sure which course is right for you? Our team will help you work out exactly what’s needed. When you get in touch, we’ll ask about the PA’s existing training, the individual’s current risk assessment and handling plan, and your specific requirements so we can match you with the right support.
