How rearranging your environment can positively impact on what you can do, small changes matter!

We tend to think of independence as something that lives inside us, our strength, our memory, our balance. But as an occupational therapist, we see it differently. How well you function on any given day isn’t just about you, it’s about how you interact with the space around you. Change the space, and you can change what’s possible.

This idea is at the core of occupational therapy’s Person Environment Occupation model, which holds that our ability to carry out everyday activities comes from the interaction between who we are, what we’re trying to do, and the environment we’re doing it in.

Imagine yourself in a kitchen where everyday items are just out of reach and jars and tins become difficult to open, even these simple tasks become exhausting or worse still, develop a risk associated with doing them. When we change or ‘adapt’ the environment to better suit you and your abilities, we often see a positive change in the performance of the individual, often without anyone needing to “get better”.

What this looks like in real life

You don’t need a completely new kitchen to feel the benefits of changing your environment. Some of the most effective changes are surprisingly small:

Why it matters

Environmental changes can support your individual needs, instead of expecting you to keep pushing harder against the challenges around you. It’s rarely about the amount of effort you put into an activity; it’s about removing unnecessary obstacles so your existing abilities can be used more effectively. In short, the most effective and less risky option isn’t doing more or trying harder but changing what’s around you.

If you’re finding certain everyday tasks harder than they used to be, it may be worth looking at your home with a fresh eye or asking an occupational therapist to do it with you.  Often, the biggest gains come not from a dramatic overhaul, but from a few thoughtful, well-placed changes.
